Overview

Stretch marks (also known as striae) are indented streaks that appear on the skin after a period of rapid growth. They can be pinkish, red, or purple in color and commonly affect pregnant women and adolescents during puberty. Stretch marks are not a medical problem because they do not pose a health risk, but they can be a cosmetic issue. Although stretch marks can't be entirely eliminated, their appearance can be diminished using different techniques.

Step 1

Apply tretinoin cream. Tretinoin creams are prescription creams which can be used to make light colored stretch marks more noticeable. These creams, when applied daily, stimulate the formation of a protein called collagen, which will help make the stretch mark look more like the surrounding skin. Tretinoin creams work best when they are applied to newly formed stretch marks (stretch marks that have appeared less than six weeks ago).

Step 2

Receive microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a technique that works well for both new and older stretch marks. With microdermabrasion, a small device is used to blow crystals at a very high speed onto the stretch marks. These crystals will then wear off the upper layers of the skin (also known as abrasion). A vacuum then sucks up the crystals and the dead skin cells. This process stimulates the growth of new skin tissue, which will be more elastic and may cover up the stretch marks.

Step 3

Get the stretch marks treated using laser therapy. Two kinds of laser treatment, called pulsed dye laser therapy and fractional photothermolysis both work to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Increased levels of collagen and elastin help the stretch marks blend in with the normal skin. Another treatment for light colored stretch marks is called an excimer laser. This technique stimulates production of melanin, which is the main pigment in skin. Excimer laser treatment thus causes light-colored stretch marks to darken, making them less visible.
