Acne scars are sometimes deep pits, but it sounds like yours are dark spots — and those can be just as tough to get rid of. Luckily, there are plenty of treatments for these skin discolorations. You just have to explore which acne scar removal treatment is right for you.

Treat your dark spots as soon as possible. Acne scars will often heal on their own over time, but if it’s still there after a year or more, it will be harder to get rid of.

There are some simple methods you can try at home to lighten the dark spots your acne has left behind. My friend Karen swears by aloe vera. You can buy the gel over the counter and use it directly on your acne scars, but what she says works the absolute best is using the fresh leaves. You can buy an aloe plant and split a leaf, then apply the gel directly onto your dark spots. Aloe is a natural moisturizer and aids in the healing process — people often use it to help heal their sunburn.

Other home treatments for acne scars that you might want to try:

  • Alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acid cream
  • Vitamin E cream
  • Cocoa butter

Clean your skin with a gentle exfoliating scrub and use it regularly. Avoid ones with large, scratchy bits — they can make your skin rougher. The idea is to smooth and moisturize your skin so that you can fade those dark spots. Instead, look for a scrub specifically formulated for sensitive skin. I’ve used finely ground walnuts mixed with yogurt. You can exfoliate with that mixture about three times a week.

There are also surgical methods that can remove acne scars. Surgery can be very effective for removing those dark spots, but it can also be expensive and painful. If you’re considering surgery for your acne scars, be sure you scope out all your options before you make your decision. Talk it over extensively with your doctor, and ask to interview patients who’ve undergone the surgery to fade their dark spots.

In the future, prevent more acne scars by avoiding picking or scratching at your acne. Don’t pop a zit! You also want to prevent the skin from drying out and scabbing, so that you don’t get any more acne scars.
