Losing Weight Fast Can Cause More Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are tears in the deeper layers of the skin caused by rapid weight gain, weight loss or grow spurts. Contrary to popular belief, these marks are more pronounced when individuals lose weight, for example, after pregnancy.
The chance of not getting tears in your skin in your late stages or after pregnancy is not in your favor. Around 90% of females are affected by these tears while pregnant. Getting those ugly and embarrassing marks can depend on many factors. They include skin elasticity, skin tone, hormonal fluctuations, and weight gain or weight loss after pregnancy.
Although these marks fade away to a silvery color, they are incredibly hard to eliminate completely. The best way to avoid them is to never have them in the first place. Even though this can be extremely difficult to avoid, there are some tips you can follow that will reduce the chances of having them in the first place.
Stretch Marks and Weight Loss
The skin is overstretched when a person gains too much weight in a short period of time. This sudden weight gain causes the dermis (middle layer) to lose skin elasticity and break. As a result, tearing and minor bleeding takes place. This is why new marks have a pink or purple color. Over a period of time when the areas that were affected are healed, the process of scar healing takes place. This is why “old” stretch marks have a silvery color. What most people don't know is that these marks become more prominent when we lose weight quickly.
In order to prevent stretch marks, try losing weight gradually and at a slow pace. If you lose weight fast, it can make your marks more prominent which is quite unattractive. Try keeping to a balanced diet that contains a variety of fruits and veggies, nuts, white meats and whole grains. Also, make sure you drink plenty of water. You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. This will help to keep your body well hydrated which will in hand help to maintain skin elasticity which is one of the most important factors to prevent marks. Regular exercise can also help your skin flexibility. Chances at prevention are a lot better if you enhance your skin elasticity.
