Stretch marks, or striae distensae, are scars that occur when skin is stretched, often occurring with growth spurts, pregnancy, or rapid weight gain, particularly if skin is not well-hydrated. Women and men with stretch marks know that it’s almost impossible to get rid of those silvery white lines. Countless over-the-counter ointments and creams promise a solution in a bottle, but usually deliver little or no result. Several clinical options are available to treat stretch marks, however, including microdermabrasion, laser therapy, and the recently-tested radio frequency therapy.

Radio frequency therapy for stretch marks is a non-invasive, safe, and less expensive option to improve skin’s appearance. Radio frequency treatments, which induce collagen production to eliminate wrinkles and stretch marks, have recently gone through a clinical study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment. In the study led by Dr. Woraphong Manuskiatti, 17 females with stretch marks underwent weekly treatments with Pollagen’s radio frequency technology for six weeks, and all 17 showed some improvement in the appearance of stretch marks. After the treatment, just over one third of patients saw a 25-50% decrease in the appearance of the scars, while almost 12% showed a 51-75% improvement in the look of their skin. Among the women undergoing treatment, 65% reported being satisfied with the results. While these results may leave some unconvinced, the numbers do suggest that radio frequency technology for stretch marks may be a good option worth considering for some candidates.

Scheduling a consultation with a skin care professional can help you gain a better understanding of the best options for stretch mark treatment, and, most importantly, the best choice for your particular skin.
