What causes stretch marks during pregnancy?
However, we will be discussing stretch marks that take place in women, and more specifically, we will be discussing stretch marks on breast. Breast stretch marks can be a distressing condition. However let us look at how these stretch marks are formed during and after pregnancy.
When the skin is stretched beyond the limits of its elasticity, the collagen fiber, a sort of connective tissue present in the dermis, is broken. This rupture in the collagen gives way to ugly red or purple coloured marks. The skin begins to heal from the top most layers, but there is no re-growth of collagen in the dermis. As a result there is scarring. These scars are known as stretch marks.
During pregnancy, there are a number of hormonal and physiological changes that take place. During and after pregnancy, the breasts stretch due to lactation or feeding the baby. As a result of the skin being stretched, stretch marks may develop. The perception is that breast stretch marks develop if there is a genetic disposition.
The fact is that most women during and after pregnancy have breast marks. In other words, most women are genetically predisposed to developing stretch marks.
Ways to prevent Breasts Stretch Marks during pregnancy.
There are a number of simple steps that we can take, in order to prevent the breast stretch marks from forming after pregnancy
- Eat right and stay fit
It is very necessary to eat the right kind of foods during and after pregnancy. This helps to promote both the baby’s and the mother’s health. Nutritious foods such as green leafy vegetables, fruit, whole grain, and good quality protein are essential to maintain the health of our skin and immune system. Eating such foods provides nutrition to our skin and to help reduce the severity of stretch marks.
- Keep the skin moisturized
Skin that is well moisturized, soft and supple can respond better to stretching. As a result the stretch marks may not be as severe as in the case of dry or brittle skin. Look after your skin during and after pregnancy by massaging it well with a good quality moisturizer or skin cream. Apply the skin cream and then massage with a loofah for about three minutes before going to bed. This ensures that the moisturizer will go deep down into the skin and the blood circulation in the area is increased.
- Drink plenty of water
It is not only external moisture that is important for the skin. The skin needs to be able to draw moisture and nutrition from the bloodstream. We need to drink plenty of water to make sure that our body’s skin is well hydrated throughout the day. Following these simple steps will help to prevent formation of breast stretch marks or reduce their severity if such marks are formed.
