What Are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, or striae, occur if you gain more than average weight during your pregnancy or if you have a family history of stretch marks. Ethnicity makes a difference: African-American women are less likely to get stretch marks. For 50-90% of women, pregnancy and stretch marks go hand in hand. Pregnancy stretch marks are also the most common form of stretch marks. Even though they are so common, many women are bothered by them. Luckily there are a number of ways for you to permanently get rid of your stretch marks after pregnancy, including through plastic surgery. Read more about plastic surgery at FemPlace.com.
Prevention
Stretch mark prevention will save you the trouble of getting rid of stretch marks once they've occurred. Stretch marks occur because the collagen and elastin that bind your skin are stressed during weight gain, resulting in tears in your skin's elastic fibers. Typically, on light-skinned women, stretch marks will appear red or pinkish. Darker-skinned women will notice that their stretch marks are lighter than the surrounding skin. They may appear on your abdomen, buttocks, breasts or thighs.
Anything I can do to change this?
Stretch marks are basically when the skin is stretched past its normal point and the collagen fibres (a chain of protein that helps bind it all together) is disrupted. Cmmon advice is that stretch marks from a temporary event such as pregnancy will fade in due course once the skin returns to it's normal size. Stretch marks from gaining weight will also fade if the weight is successfully lost (I can vouch personally for this as my brother got stretch marks after putting on weight and has lost them almost completely after a year at the gym.
Similar to acne scarring, laser treatment claims to reduce the appearance, though obviously this is costly. Less successful are over the counter/beauty preparations that use abrasives or moisturisers to reduce the appearance.
Unfortunately, usually the marks will not disappear completely, though they may so faded that they are unnoticeable unless you look specifically for them.

Loose Skin and weight loss
Q: “Tom, I began a fat loss program using your Burn The Fat system and it worked so well I got down to 15 1/2 stones (from 19). However, this has caused me a problem: Excess abdominal skin. I didn't crash lose this weight, it came off at the rate of about 2 lbs. per week just like you recommended. Now I'm unsure of whether to carry on, as my abdomen has quite a lot of excess skin – I feel like I've turned into a bloody Shar-Pei! Does everyone go through this? Will the skin tighten up? I was overweight for more than 12 years. Am I going to end up needing surgical skin removal? Can you offer me any advice? I'm a medical student in the UK and my colleagues seem determined to proffer surgery as the only option.”
A: This is a very common question/concern and there are no definitive answers or guaranteed solutions if you have already lost a large amount of weight and you have a large amount of loose skin remaining. In extreme cases, surgical skin removal is the only option, but in most cases, I've found that the skin tightens up over time at least to some degree. If you're still in the process of losing weight, don't assume that surgery will be a necessity. It's sometimes dificult to tell in the early stages how much is loose skin and how much is remaining body fat, as well as how much the skin will tighten up over time.
By losing weight slowly and sensbibly, you can put the odds in your favor. The list of 14 points below will help you better understand the causes and potential solutions to this cosmetic problem.:
Celebrity Stretch Marks
The average woman may assume that superstar celebrities don't get stretch marks during or after pregnancy. This fallacy is largely due to the fact that people believe that:
- Celebrities have trainers who can whip them into shape during and after pregnancy, which helps them forgo stretch marks
- Stars can afford the high cost of laser surgery for stretch marks that can zap away their skin issues.
While it is true that celebrities can afford to remove stretch marks with surgery, there is no guarantee that surgical enhancements will work. Also, contrary to popular thought, many celebrities choose non-invasive methods of fixing imperfections. They are not willing to take huge risks like surgery unless it is for enhancements like breast augmentation or body shaping – and some celebrities, like Sharon Stone, don't like to fool with it at all.
Yes, celebrity stretch marks are very prevalent, but many women and men who have the knowledge to cover or minimize them do so quite frequently. One of the benefits of being in the limelight is that actors, actresses, musicians and various entertainers run across people who can show them valuable tricks of the trade that can be utilized on a constant basis. From the use of makeup, exercise, or various lotion and stretch mark cream, one can hide celebrity stretch marks so that they are no longer a concern to famous personalities.
